Worry Free Electric Fence FOr Dogs

August 9th, 2009

There’s a wide open field next to our house. It’s pretty big and has tall weeds and scrub and bushes growing all over it. While we are part of a small town outside of Houston, we’re far enough outside of the big city to enjoy the tranquility of the country without actually being way out in the boonies. So this open field is a good place to find some of the more expected wildlife that you would likely find in the country. Namely snakes, some poisonous, mostly not, opossums, rabbits, squirrels, armadillos, along with the typical mice and rats that you’d find most anywhere. And of course, that’s where my two dogs have a tendency to run off to as soon as my back is turned.

I have a collie and boxer mix, Cinnamon and Jake. When Cinnamon gets out there, the biggest thing for me is all the stickers she brings back. It makes grooming her coat that much more time consuming since her coat is already thick. I’m not all that worried that she’ll get attacked out there because she seems to be the smarter one of the two. She tends to not want to deal too much with what she’s not familiar with. Now Jake is entirely different. There’s no telling what he’ll get into because everything is a game to him.

My worries were confirmed when they both came home about two weeks ago and Jake had been bitten by something. After rushing to the vet to make sure it wasn’t a rabid bite, (not cheap, by the way) I decided that enough was enough and it was time to get a fence. Now Jake can jump a six foot fence without much difficulty so I started researching online for an electric fence for dogs. I found a web site that, to me, was pretty reasonable. It’s gryffonproducts for anyone interested.

There are many different kinds of electric fences for dogs and they all range in price, from $130.00 to $310.00. The basic kit will cover about a quarter or a third of an acre. Additional accessory kits ($48.00 each) will increase your area. Still, all that said, gryffonproducts comes in less expensive than most other sites. Plus it’s shipped directly to you. Pay a little extra and it’ll be on your doorstep the next day.

It was easy to install, taking me a day to do about half an acre. A few training sessions and Cinnamon had it down. Jake, well, he got held back a grade, but he’s doing fine now. Now when I get home from work, I know right where my pets are and I have no more worries that they’ll get attacked out in that field.

Not only that, but Jake used to run out in the road to greet me and my wife when we’d get home. No more fears about him getting hit by a car now. Cinnamon sits under the shade tree in the corner waiting patiently for us to come down the street while Jake’s busy getting his head stuck in a bucket or some such thing. When we show up, a herd of wild horses couldn’t get him across that fence line. He waits for us to come to him.

My research showed that overall, gryffonproducts is cheaper than most competitors, even beating some manufacturers that sell directly to the public. Since the electric fence for dogs that I was looking at range anywhere from $150.00 to $310.00 that means that I get to keep some of my hard earned cash. Who doesn’t want to do that?

A Cheaper Electric Fence For Dogs Equals Benefits

August 9th, 2009

My neighbor has a problem with my Great Dane, Tempest. He likes to bury his bones in her flowerbed. We’re fortunate in that she’s a long time friend of the family and she’s an animal lover like us. Plus her Pug likes to return the favor in our flowerbed.

One day she came over to have a talk with us. Apparently she was getting fed up with Tempest mauling her tulips and I guess he did a better than usual job this last time. So we talked about ways to resolve the situation. We live in a community neighborhood, which means that we have to go through a process to get approval to put up fences or paint our house or make improvements on our property. This process can take up to a month to get approval and we both decided we wanted a quicker solution. So we agreed to split the expense of an electric fence for dogs.

So we researched it for a couple days and compared results. We decided to go with a website, gryffonproducts, that she found that is cheaper than most others but delivers the same quality of merchandise as the more expensive sites. There were several types of electric fences for dogs to choose from and we made the choice of joining only our backyards together. So between her kit, my kit and the additional accessory kits, we ended up splitting $593.00.

She decided to go with the Inground Fence for $163.21. She just has the Pug and he’s not a very aggressive dog so the basic fence was a good choice for her. Now Tempest is a large breed and I was concerned that just the sheer size of him would allow him to bull his way through the fence so I got the Stubborn Dog Inground Fence for $184.79. The key thing to remember is to make sure the points on the collar have good contact with the skin. The receiver that comes with the kit has a way of using your collar with a quick attach/quick release clasp. It’s very easy.

Teaching is really easy. A video comes with the kit and demonstrates you how to train your dog over a two week period or so. Both our dogs learned on their own very quickly. I was surprised because Tempest is hard to train (he wants to play ALL the time). I showed him the flags, let him walk into the boundary zone, the collar beeped and vibrated and then increased in strength the longer he stayed in the zone. I tugged his leash and called him to me and he was right there. He knew he didn’t like those white flags and he doesn’t go near them now. Pug was little hard headed, but he learned.

We put it in in half a day. Her nephew and his boy helped my buddy and me put it in and get it working. Two people could put in an electric fence for dogs that covers the area ours did, about an acre, in a day. The hardest part was trying to work out how to block off the flowerbeds without buying additional accessory kits (we had three to begin with, plus our own kits) but we got it in the end. Now our dogs romp and play together and the flowers are safe at last and we installed an electric fence for dogs without the hassle of the community counsel giving us grief and holding us up for a month or so.

The Benefits Of An Electric Fence For Dogs

August 9th, 2009

There is a truck-stop next to my house and it stays pretty busy all day and all night. While they have the yard fenced off with a six foot chain link fence, there’s a gap in the fence and it’s not on my property so I can’t go and repair it. And that is where my dog likes to run off to when I’m not looking.

Tracker is a Black Lab mix. I call him that not because he’s good at hunting anything down but because no matter how much I try to stop it, he manages to track mud and dirt into the house. I gave up carpets a couple of years ago an am seriously thinking of putting up some sheet metal on the walls. But that’s my dog and I love him anyways.

After I caught him in the truck-stop’s parking lot a couple of times, I was worried about him being hit by an eighteen wheeler or picked up by a stranger. Tracker is a friendly dog and really just wants to play, but I’m afraid a trucker might not see it that way.

So I went online and researched some methods to keep Tracker in the yard. I found this site called gryffonproducts and they have several kinds of electric fences for dogs. I went ahead and researched them and it took me a little while to put all this together and then I thought I’d save someone else the trouble and pay it forward.

If you’re looking for something real quick and easy, gryffonproducts offers Instant Fence. For less than $50.00, you get a wireless fence kit good for a diameter 180 ft. Remember, that’s diameter, not radius. All of these kits, by the way, come with a receiver collar.

Now there are eight other types on the plate that are simply variations of a theme, namely a wire that you bury a few inches in the ground, marked with pin flags, and a transmitter that sends a radio frequency through the wire to be picked up by a receiver on the dogs collar. The receiver emits a tone and/or vibrates to let the dog know that they are near the boundary and not to go any further. If the dog gets close enough to the wire, the receiver gives a shock (of five various settings) to correct the dog.

All of the electric fences for dogs come with a basic set up of about 500 feet of wire, enough to do about a quarter of an acre. There is a Wire and Flag Accessory Kit ($48.39), with an additional 500 ft of wire and about 50 extra flags, that allows you to increase the area of containment for your dog. Most types allow you to increase in area up to 10 acres (via the necessary number of accessory kits), but a few will allow up to 25 acres.

I looked up the reviews on all of them and they all received a rating of four stars or better on a five star rating system. The main and most obvious drawback being that burying the wire is the hardest and most unpleasant part of the installation. I saw where a lot of customers attached it to existing fences (wooden, wrought iron, chain link, etc.) without difficulty and some even tied into their neighbors in-ground fence.

The other drawback was the durability of the collar provided. For bigger dogs or dogs with thick fur, some jury-rigging was necessary. But it seemed that these were easy and quick fixes.

Every review that I’ve read stated that they would recommend the electric fence for dogs to a friend or family member. They all say that teaching their dogs was easy and that while most dogs learned right away, some took a couple days to finally get the message.

All in all, gryffonproducts offers several electric fences for dogs and it just depends on what it is that you actually need or prefer. They start at $130.00 and range all the way up to $309.00 for your basic kit that will fence off 500 linear feet. Accessory kits are $48.39 for each additional 500 linear feet of wire.

All have a warning setting on the receiver that gives a beep and/or vibrates only. The correction settings are varied. Most offer just five separate levels and one offers seven different levels. All have run thru prevention.

Overall, the best deal would be the Innotec UltraSmart Contain ‘N’ Train In-ground Pet Fencing and Remote Training System. This kit features all the previously mentioned items in the Standard Kits. It is one of those that expands up to 25 acres if that’s what you need (additional Kits required). But it provides a few other tid-bits such as a remote trainer with a range of 150 yards, batteries that are rechargeable and a battery charger. Also included is a lightning protector.

In my personal opinion, the remote is a big sell all by itself for this kit. Tracker has dug up a few flowers that my wife planted and while he survived her wrath, he didn’t come out unscathed. With the remote, I didn’t have to fence off the flower gardens, which was a life saver for me because there are three of them. All I did was while training Tracker where the boundaries for the fence were, I worked with him on staying out of the flowerbeds. So that was a win-win for me. I pocketed the money I would have spent buying the accessory kits to fence off the gardens and I taught Tracker to stay out of the flowerbeds.

At $308.71, it still comes in cheaper than the manufacturer. In fact, electric fences for dogs are consistently sold at gryffonproducts at a cost 14% lower than the manufacturer. And let’s face it, money that stays in your pocket is money earned.

How To Build A Doghouse With The Correct Dimensions

August 9th, 2009

The following article is brought to you by PetiPaaws. PetiPaaws is a new “miracle drug” for cats and dogs that acts as an anti-aging formula along with health and well-being. PetiPaaws encourages you to come and visit them after you read the article. PetiPaaws

There are many plans for doghouses available on the net, and you can download them and use them to build one for your pet. There are custom doghouses and specially insulated ones for very cold weather and there are special dimensions and suggestions offered, which you can vary according to the size of your dog. Most of the time, the plan includes construction details, materials lists and even photos.

As per the norms of the American Humane Society, the height of a doghouse is the height of the dog plus nine inches. Similarly the length is an added eighteen inches to the length of the dog and for the width you need to add twelve inches to the dog’s length.

Step by step instructions are provided in the free doghouse plans, and even a beginner DIYer can follow them using common household tools. There are different plans for building a doghouse in the garden and inside the house. After all it has to be made into a cozy retreat for your pet, so that it likes to live and sleep in its kennel when it is resting.

The material used is wood, but it is of different types for the floor, the roof and the exterior. For the floor and the roof rough-sawn treated pine is recommended. For the framing you can use untreated pine and pressure-treated pine for the under floor skids. The walls can be made of plywood.

Pressure treated timber should not be put on any parts of the doghouse, which the dog can chew. It can be toxic, because it contains preservatives. Hence the pressure treated timber is put on the roof, floor and skids. The parts which are likely to be gnawed by the dog are the walls and the inside framing, and these should therefore be made of untreated timber.

If your dog is in the habit of chewing and gnawing everything around it, then untreated timber can be used for the entire doghouse. But untreated timber when exposed to weather might not last long; hence it should be well sealed and painted, so that it does not absorb moisture.

The same treatment should be given to the exterior plywood, because if it is not pressure treated, it will not be moisture-resistant. Special care should be taken about the painting, so it is best to use Wood Primer, Enamel Undercoat and Super Gloss Enamel. This prevents it from becoming toxic and does not allow water to seep in and rot.

Insulated doghouses are common in cold countries, if you want to have a proper outdoor doghouse. If the size is right and the dog is in the habit of living outdoors, this could be an ideal solution.

The History Of Military Working Dogs

August 8th, 2009

The call of modern warfare as the Gulf war demonstrated in 1991, exemplified our use of the most sophisticated, technology advanced equipment that the US could procure to bring swift and decisive victory for a just cause. To this end, the US had in the past, expended every available resource to meet the ultimate goal. But although the face of war changed, some fundamental tools and weapons used have not. As a matter of fact, the US followed certain paths laid out by the ancient peoples of Persia and Assyria with their use of four-legged technology in warfare.

Canines or ‘wardogs’ were used in warfare throughout history supporting combat operations. Long before the invention of gunpowder, dogs were gathered in columns, many of them clad in mail armor and spiked collars by the military forces of the Roman Empire. The English were known to have equipped their dogs with long spikes placed over their heads and had them charge forward to attack the enemy’s Calvary. Britain also employed the use of Mastiffs in 55 BC to fight Caesar’s invading armies. Napoleon was probably the first one to make use of the dog’s superior senses by chaining them to the walls of Alexandria, using them to warn of an impending attack. The borders of Dalmatian, a Croatian seaside province, used a Dalmatian dog breed (home of the Dalmatian) to warn of approaching Turks from Croatia.

The United States did not make extensive use of dogs prior to 1942. Up until that point, Germany was the dominant user of dogs. The Germans trained them for scout duty with infantry patrols. However, their primary job was to use their superior senses to give warning of an enemy’s approach. The dogs were also used to ferry messages between front line fighters and headquarters to the rear of the fighting.2

The Belgians and Russians followed closely behind Germany in their use of military dogs. The French used dogs for transportation purposes mainly with light carts carrying food and supplies. France had one canine training center, the Army Kennel for casualty dogs, at Fontainebleau. It was rumored that the French government encouraged the experimental use of dogs in areas other than rescue.

In all, many European countries continued with use of dogs in one form or another up until the start of World War I. Germany had, by far, the most experience with training dogs for war. However, France and Great Britain made greater use of them as messengers during WWI than Germany. The advantages of using the four-legged messengers were too plentiful to ignore. The animals were less likely to get captured than a human messenger, and less likely to get shot. Furthermore, sets of dogs were trained to run along the front lines and others to run to the back of the fighting to deliver messages.

At the start of World War I, America had no program for training dogs, or for that matter, using dogs in any capacity. But by By July 1943, over 11,000 dogs had been procured, with most of them coming from the Dogs for Defense. The first War Dog reception and training center was established at Front Royal, Virginia in August of 1942. The completion of this center allowed for the training of 200 men and 500 dogs. But the enormous influx of dogs pushed these numbers up to 400 men and 900 dogs by June of 1943. Other reception and training centers included Fort Robinson, Camp Rimini, San Carlos, Beltsville and Cat Island.

Keeping Your Cat Healthy

August 7th, 2009

To keep your cat healthy a majority of time, all you really need to do is give him good shelter, food, and plenty of water. Also a range of cat toys to keep them entertained and active. Like other living things however, cats can get sick from time to time no matter what you do.

As a cat owner, you’ll want to ensure that you feed your cat only the best. Premium cat food is the ideal for cats, as the food is designed to keep your pet happy and healthy. You’ll also need to pay attention to his behavior, so you’ll know when he’s sick and when to take him to the vet. Most of the more common ailments and sicknesses are minor, although there are some cases where a vet can be the determining factor between life and death for your cat.

Your cat’s behavior will be one of the most critical factors when you are trying to determine whether or not he is under the weather. Acting sluggish, laying around all the time, lack of energy and not eating are all signs that you need to take him to the vet immediately. His coat is also a good thing to watch as well. If you notice his coat dull and patchy or notice him shedding abnormally, you should contact your vet as soon as you possibly can.

Diarrhea and vomiting are sometimes common, even with basic sickness. On the other hand, if your cat seems to be doing either one of the two for more than a day, you should contact your veterinarian. Coughing is common as well, simply because coughing will cats dislodge hairballs. If your cat seems to be coughing for another reason, you should have him checked out as soon as possible.

To ensure that your cat isn’t subjected to various diseases, you should always make sure that he stays up do date with his vaccinations. There are several diseases out there that require vaccinations, including rabies and feline distemper. Feline distemper is one of most devastating diseases a cat can get, yet it is also one of the easiest to prevent as well. The disease strikes cats very fast, and leaves you as an own very little time to seek treatment.

Feline leukemia is another disease that is very deadly, yet can be prevented early on with the proper vaccinations. Although the disease isn’t possible for humans to contract, it can be spread quickly among cats. There are vaccinations that can treat the disease these days, although you’ll still want to be careful and not expose other cats around a cat you know has feline leukemia.

Another problem, which is very common with cats that stay outdoors, is worms. Cats that have worms will normally have a lackluster coat and little to no appetite. There are several different types of worms, including ringworm and hookworm. Worms can come from fleas, lice, or even the organs of dead rodents that cats consume. Normally, the cat will digest the eggs which will later mature and attach themselves to the walls of the intestines. If you feed your cat garlic frequently during feedings, it can help to protect him against worms.

If you take care of your cat, chances are you’ll keep him healthy for years to come. You should always make sure he has quality food, and doesn’t miss any of his scheduled checkups with the vet. If he gets the proper vaccinations when he is required to get them, he should be safe against numerous pests and diseases. Taking the proper steps with your cat now will prevent anything from happening in the future.
