November 7th, 2009

As an alternative to using so many products from your pet store or veterinarian, you should consider trying a natural at-home dog remedy which might be better and safer for your dog. Why be concerned? Consider the long term effects for your dog’s health. Many of the commercial ingredients, chemicals or medicines are linked to various organ damage, cancers, heart problems, skin problems, and many other conditions that can develop over time with your dog. Thus the trend of dog owners like me sometimes turning to a natural dog remedy instead of relying on commercial products that might have long term negative effects on the dog’s health.

Many of these natural home remedies for dogs are quite easy to obtain, often they are items you already have in your home. If fact, many of these items can be found in your kitchen. Here are a few examples of simple but effective remedies:

1. Garlic can be used as a flea repellent.
2. Both mineral oil and olive oil work great for treating dogs with ear mites or ear infections.
3. Try applying vitamin E topically if your dog has dry or irritated skin.
4. Skin problems from allergies can be tough to manage, especially if the problem is fairly wide spread.

Unfortunately this describes my dog. Try oats in bath water. My dog doesn’t like the bath but his rough skin on his hind legs do improve significantly from doing this.

5. Epsom salts and water for sore or raw feet. Works for us humans, and for your dog!

There are so many of these natural home remedies for dogs that are safe, easy and often right in your cupboard to use anytime at little cost. Keep your dog happier and away from the pet clinic too.

Holistic Pet Care Products Are Often The Best Option

November 5th, 2009

I am the proud owner of a young Miniature Aussie dog and I believe that in many cases a natural dog remedy is safer to use for his health over the long haul. If you have a dog or cat have you wondered about the trend towards using all natural pet care products? It is certainly reasonable to wonder whether these products or commercial products are the healthiest for your dog or cat. There are a few facts that should be considered when you are deciding which products to use for your pet.

One obvious advantage you get with natural pet products is they typically do not contain any chemicals, artificial fillers or synthetics. Commercially made products on the other hand will tend to have all this and a lot of preservatives. The holistic products contain only natural substances and ingredients. This is important over the life of your pet because chemicals and other unnatural products will build up and start causing adverse side effects such as cancers or auto-immune disorders.

Holistic options like the natural dog remedy type of products I look for are also very safe and highly effective in providing relief. Such products and methods have been used throughout time to treat many different medical problems in both humans as well as animals. They are still used today because they are so effective. When you are looking for a solution or cure for a health issue that your pet is suffering from, holistic pet products can provide you with the effective solution that you seek.

Lastly, you can often find the natural products more readily available than commercial products. It’s good for you to have some base knowledge of what holistic products are recommended in different situations so that you’ll be able to speak knowledgably with your veterinarian and in some cases you will understand how to provide a safe and effective remedy for your pet on your own. Holistic pet products can provide you with that opportunity.

There is a great resource that gives you comprehensive knowledge of these holistic pet products and methods for helping your pet. You can read more about this resource titled Home Remedies for Cats and Dogs and you will understand like I now do that management of your pet’s health care is important. Reading this book has helped me understand why in most cases for my buddy a natural dog remedy is safer and more effective without the side effects.

There are few fundamental of dog training that are to be remembered while teaching the dog any thing and everything.

The sit command is very well work and easy command. This command helps you to redirect your dog’s direction and action when he is over excited.

Like once you return house from work or preparing his much loved food, your skipping dog can be put to quite via the sit command.

It is the basic/basic/initial/first) command to be introduced rather than training the further commands as “stand”, “stay”, “shake hands” etc. Any dog who does not know “sit” command cannot other commands too.

Step By Step dog training
Step 1:
dog training desires you to expend a plenty of time with the puppy, at least in stage . To train him the command, first try your canine use with the word “sit” and the action related with it. To do this, hang on with him and say louder and clear “sit” whenever he sits.

Step 2:
Whenever he sits, reward him with a treat. keep in mind! Never stand and throw the knick-knack over him. This will change the canine’s sitting mode. Instead this, you come down to his position and lay the treat before of him. Thus he is able to associate the reward with the action.

Step 3:
When practicing the obedience lesson the next day, hang the treat nearly his nose level and allow him react to it. Never place the treat high as that might make the puppy jump for it.

Step 4:
Every times the dog sit yet when you are not in his teaching mode, say “sit” and praise the dog. This makes the dog to know that this action is to be obeyed not just at the time of coaching! bear in mind, use treats and rewards only during the teaching period if not you possibly will pass on the faults meaning to the dog that you will give to eat him each times he sits.

How To Train The Dog To Leave It

November 2nd, 2009

The winning “Leave It” command means that the dog should stop that picky action on receiving this command and center on you to get the next order . This command is one of the huage helpful command in the dog obedience training. The dog trained to this command not only gets protected from receiving into any unlikable circumstances, but too is painless and safe to manage.
The leave command is huage helpful in the cases when:
1. The dog is drinking or about to drink something unwanted.
2. The dog is jumping over some guest or that cat on the tree.
3. The dog is about to get into a clash with one more dog.
4. The dog is runing after a cat or those kitchen roaches.

So as to train the dog training for this command, there are a ways of methods.

Trick 1:
Take two treats. Put one in your pocket, and the other on a tiny bench, of long reaching to the dog’s nose. Call your dog. Let him see the treat on that desk. The flash he moves ahead to grab the treat, give him the command “leave it” in a hard though polite tone. If he act upon you, praise him and give him the next treat from your pocket.
You can carry out this command three to four times a day and the dog becomes perfect in follow you in not more than a week’s time. In this trick, never give him the treat he is hunger for. Always take it out from your pocket and give it to him.

Like for example if he is already barking on another dog, stay untill he gets cool and then begin the training session again. This also trim down the odds of disobedience.
2. Dont scream or yell at the dog if he break the rules. This might give the dog a way of getting your concentration.
3. Dont lose your patience. If he disobeys once, try the next time and then again until you do well. But without getting angry at the dog!

Cabin Fever

November 2nd, 2009

All of us can get cabin fever with the cold winter days upon us. Your pet dog can get it too! If your thoughts are turning to fresh ocean breezes and sunsets over San Diego Bay, consider taking your pet with you. Your dog can use the exercise and sunshine to stay healthy. Mission Beach Park is a great place for your pet. It has miles of glorious sand overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

For sightseeing, be sure to add Coronado Island to your schedule. Coronado Island is on a peninsula across the bay near downtown San Diego. It is home to the famous Hotel del Coronado. This family-oriented island with its quaint coves and tide pools is very popular with vacationers. There is lots to do and explore. The Old Town Trolley circles around San Diego Bay stopping at the world-famous San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park and the Seaport Village shops amongst other places. If you wish to sail across San Diego Bay, take the gondola ride or the ferry ride.

There are pet-friendly hotels in downtown San Diego near the 4.3 acre waterfront park along the bay. Both the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, and Hotel Indigo(which has partnered with the San Diego Humane Society) are highly reccommended places to stay. The Bayfront has breath-taking views of the bay. In the afternoon, walk your dog in the waterfront park near your hotel, or take a 8 mile drive north of downtown San Diego to Pacific Beach where your dog can splash in the ocean. Dine and shop at the famous Gaslamp Quarter. Before traveling, check and make sure that your dog carrier, like the Pet-A-Scope carrier, meets airline requirements. Some dog carriers can be adapted for car rides too. For your convenience, have your pet carry its own water bottle and food in a dog back pack. Most dogs can carry one fourth of their body weights. Do a few short training walks using a 6 to 8 foot retractable dog leash to get an idea of your pet’s abilities. Your pup will feel useful working up an appetite. You will want some paddings under the pack. A good comfortable fit is important. A collapsible dog bowl is convenient to take with you when its feeding time. Don’t forget to outfit your dog with a Cinch-It waterproof dog collar for the trip especially if you plan on spending time by the water.

If you wish to pamper your dog, treat your pet at Camp Run-A-Mutt (3265 India St, San Diego) which is located about 2 miles north of downtown San Diego. The outdoor area with turf, waterfall and pond is great! Your dog will have lots of fun in a fully-supervised, safe and cage free environment, and will be tired but happy to see you after you have been gone all day sightseeing.

Enjoy your winter escape traveling with your super pet! With some careful planning, it will be a win-win idea. Take lots of photos, and bring back lovely memories. For more info about pet gear, please visit these links: dog bowls - super pet

Cebu Birdwatching Excursions Established As BirdLife & Philippines Sign Understanding

November 2nd, 2009

The Department of Tourism (DOT) and BirdLife International Inc. (BLI) have signed an agreement to support a bird conservation program as part of its strategy to help birdwatching tourism in Cebu and other parts of the Philippines.

Tourism Secretary Joseph “Ace” Durano said the DOT is promoting Birdwatching Phillipines as part of its adventure tourism packages.

It was declared the “species champion” for the Cebu Flowerpecker during the 2009 British Bird Watching Fair in Ruthland, United Kingdom.

”The country has a very big potential in mainstream tourism that’s why we are pushing tourism traffic in the interior,” Durano said.

Durano was in Cebu Monday for the ceremonial signing and press conference of the Species Champion Agreement of DOT and BirdLife International Inc. (BLI) at the Marco Polo Hotel in Lahug, Cebu City.

Durano revealed the bird conservation program started two years ago but it only picked up this year when the British fair featured the Cebu Flowerpecker as its flagship species, under the theme “lost and found.”

The critically endangered Cebu Flowerpecker was once though extinct until it was rediscovered in 1992 in pocket forests in the hinterland barangay of Tabunan in Cebu City.

Of the 200 bird species in the Philippines, the Cebu Flowerpecker that is found in Alcoy town ranked third among the rarest birds in the country.

”This creates instant awareness and consciousness. If you are a birdwatcher, you will be compelled to consider Cebu as your next site,” Durano said.

“This bird has never been photographed and this further creates awe,” he said.

He said Alcoy town residents can become tour guides to help locate and identify the birds.

Durano added birdwatching is relatively cheaper compared to other tourism activities such as scuba diving and golfing.

“All you need is a pair of binoculars,” he said.

He said a big market for birdwatching exists.

Michael Lu, president of Wild Bird Club, said there are about eight million birdwatchers in the world.

Birdwatching is also one of the fastest growing recreational activities in Europe and the United States.

Birdwatchers have excellent chances to encounter the Cebu Flowerpecker in September to December.

Richard Grimmet, head of conservation and manager of the preventing extinction program of BirdLife International encouraged Cebuanos to do whatever they can to support the conservation and preservation of birds and their habitats.

BLI classified 190 species as critically endangered in the 2008 IUCN Red List because of their very small and declining populations and ranges.

BLI and its local partner Haribon Foundation Inc. appointed the Cebu Biodiversity Conservation Foundation Inc. (CBCFI) as the species guardian for the Cebu Flowerpecker and other endemic species and habitats in Cebu.

Lisa Marie Paguntalan, research director of the Cebu Biodiversity Conservation Foundation, encouraged politicians to recognize forest conservation and to adopt conservation education as part of their agenda, so Cebuanos will understand how their everyday lives affect the environment.

How To Train The Dog To Go To Your Spot

November 2nd, 2009

“Go to your spot” order is huge useful in situation where you need to send the dog’s action. similar to for example when you have visitors at your house, you certainly do not want your dog to jump all over your visitors and irritate and fright your gust. In this case if the dog is trained for “go to you spot” which can be any thing, his bed or mat or room, you get the total setting under direct.

The “go to” order is also supportive when:

1. You are taking your lunch and don’t want your dog to beg around.
2. While he is barking excessively, this word forward his thought effectively and helps to make him cool.

Before dog training your pet for this command, keep a few things in mind:

1. The dog must ever sense this word as a punishment. Thus use it only where essential.
2. Fix his mark like the bed or his crate or somewhere you want him to sleep and do not adjust it over again . Like if you have bring in him to the order “go to your bed” then do not convert it by saying “go to your crate or mat”. This produce confusion.

Step By Step Training

Step1:

Stay two meters away from the mark. Name your dog. Give him the word “go to your mat”. At the same time as doing so, direct your finger towards his mat and throw his Interesting treat over pets mat. He will run to the location to get the treat. Praise him at the time he does so.

Step2:

Repeat the above technique a lots of time. All time you want point towards his mat mean time giving him the command. Be generous in giving treats and praises.

Step3:

When the dog has started act upon you, step by step raise your space from his mat. Start order the dog at the time you are in the same room, then gradually shift on to the other room and then outside the house.

A successful “go to your spot” will make the dog go back to his mat or bed from anywhere.

Step4:

Once the dog has mastered the word, it is the time to decrease the treats, but not praises!

Treat him each third or four time he act upon you. Instead of giving him the treat to lure, price the dog for his obedience.

Contented Cats: Indoors Or Outdoors

November 1st, 2009

Until my recent visit to my sister’s home, I have always felt sorry for cats that are never allowed to go outdoors. It just seems to go against the intentions of Mother Nature. My own two cats really enjoy their cat door we had installed just so they can go in and out as they please. And it gives me so much peace of mind knowing they can get in when I am gone, especially if they aren’t in when I go. Before having the cat door, if they weren’t in when I left for work, I would feel so bad knowing they had to spend the day outdoors waiting for my return, even though I knew there were places they could take shelter from the elements.

However my Mother has expensive, adorable cats, especially chosen to minimize allergy problems, and they are as happy as any cats I have ever encountered. Why? Well start with all the crazy and imaginative toys she has for them. This long tunnel thing they run around in; the circular toys with the balls they bat around. Various perches and hideaways. She even got a very nice bird cage and put several parakeets in it, made sure it was constructed so as to keep the cats out and sturdy enough to not tip over as they are checking it out, and it’s like their own personal TV show. Same with the aquarium, with colorful goldfish. They can’t get in but they sure enjoy looking in.

And here’s the clincher. They go out for “walks” in her Kittywalk Stroller. They love it! She also just takes them out in it when she works in the garden, and positions it in different places in the yard, so they can enjoy the fresh air and sunshine and be close to her, which appears to be their favorite place to be. No surprise there…

So I have had to revise my opinion, these cats look as healthy and happy as they get. Having said all this, I have no regrets letting my own two go outdoors, and would not change that. I even go spend time in the yard just to please them, as their favorite time to be out there seems to be with us. The longer we are out there the longer they stay out too. The playful one likes to jump on my back from behind and leap over my head as I squat down to pull weeds. I guess I have a strong heart as the shock hasn’t caused a heart attack yet.

So I know there are pros and cons as far as the indoor vs. outdoor approach with cats. I can happily say mine don’t have a strong hunting instinct and don’t bring me dead birds or rodents (have had those kind in the past). A lot depends on one’s lifestyle and living situations. In the end I think our cats can be healthy and happy with either situation, if we are responsible and loving owners.

Dog Training – Finest Dog Leads And Leashes

November 1st, 2009

Dog leashes or leads are an extremely essential training tool or even just for general care and wellbeing for your dog. Whether you use your leash for taking you dog for long walks or only use it for teaching your dog right from wrong in the comfort of your back garden
, a lead is always an important buy for you and your dog.

As a dog owner and a consumer, your choice of dog leads/leashes is as you might expect, huge. With so much choice and variations, choosing which lead or leash to use can be a bigger challenge than the actual training of your dog.

So what are the different kinds of leads and leashes? Well trust me there are thousands out there to choose from, I will only go through a few of the more popular types of leash as I’m sure there are many different types of leads being brought onto the market every week and it would be an impossible task to keep track of all of them.

In the next part of this article I will first go through the different types of lead then finish off with my personal views and preferences.

Extending leads

These do exactly what is says, they ‘extend’ away from the owner for a certain distance before running out of slack. With these leashes the owner has control of when to stop the lead extending further and can be used just like a normal leash if needs be.

Slip leads

These leads are a simple type of lead with a loop on both sides normally with and adjustable clip at the end that tightens when pulled or loosens around the dog’s neck for comfort when there is no pulling. Used by many for dog training.

Nylon leads

This is the cheaper option of dog lead, the simplest form of dog leash available, often causes rubbing and digging into your dog’s skin. Nylon leashes are best avoided.

Bungee leads

These leads help to eliminate the slack that other leads cause so that your dog does not trip over the leash and there is less pulling on your arm from a dog in the training process.

Leather leads

This is a popular type of lead that is comfortable for your dog and gives you full control of how far your dog can wonder. A good lead for training but can be tiring on your arm if your dog tends to try and pull you around.

My Conclusion
It is the preference of the trainer in hand at the end of the day but I feel leather leads are best for me and show your dog sum gentle authority when starting to train. Letting your dog wonder too far on walks can give your dog too much freedom and chance to misbehave.

If you are interested in training then I would go for a leather lead to begin, if you just like going for walks in the park or your dog is well behaved then you could maybe opt for an extendable leash.
