There are currently seven different breed groups according to the AKC. They are sporting, hound, working, terrier, toy, non-sporting, and herding.
Sporting dogs are Retrievers, Spaniels and Pointers. Non-Sporting breeds take the cake when it comes to variety. This group includes the Dalmatian, Bulldog, Lhasa Apso, the Chow Chow and many more. While they may not be ideal for sporting, hunting or herding dogs, don’t let that sell these breeds short. They still excel at many other things, including show ring performances, breed competitions and confirmation shows. A extraordinary member of this group is the Poodle which was ranked the second most intelligent dog breed in the world (the most intelligent is the Border Collie).
Herding dogs are used on ranches and farms for their capability to move and defend horses. They are recognized for being bright and very effortless to train. Housing can be an issue. Some dogs are happy with apartment living, like the Corgi.
