Stop Dog Barking Training

May 22nd, 2010

Like every type of pet a dog can have all sorts of irritating behaviors, and one of the worst can involve excessive barking. All sorts things can cause a dog to bark, and it’s necessary to identify the exact reason so that the problem can be dealt with effectively. Something in the dog’s surroundings will be responsible for eliciting the barking. The barking may be an assertion of supremacy, in response to another animal or dog in the area. Or the dog may bark to declare its territorial borders. And it may bark just because it likes to bark. Barking can be problematic for some dogs who have never been properly socialized with other dogs, and so they bark to get more attention from their owners.

How To Cure Barking

Many dog owners just make the barking problem worse by rewarding their dog when the barking stops; of course, this kind of negative attention is only a short-term fix. It’s absolutely essential for a dog to be taught that barking is simply unacceptable, and the owner won’t reward this type of behavior. When the dog owner responds to the barking issue by screaming at the dog, the owner is simply giving the dog attention which encourages the behavior, even though your response is negative. Allowing a barking dog to come inside, also sustains the bad behavior, and you can expect that your response will cause the barking to persist and worsen. Treats or sympathy offered to help the dog “calm down”, are also the wrong approach, and if you use this technique, you will have many more days of dealing with this dog barking problem.

There are a few training techniques you could use to fix a dog barking problem. One such method, is to avoid responding when the dog begins barking for reasons such as the doorbell, or phone ringing. You should show the dog that the sound of the ringing doorbell or phone, is no cause for alarm, and you can do this by not getting up immediately when these sounds happen. During your dog training period, it’s a good idea to let the phone and doorbell ring frequently so that the dog can grow accustomed to the sound. Eventually, it won’t react when it hears household sounds.

Lest a dog barking issue should prevail during the owner’s absence, this issue can be prevented as well. One way to eliminate this problem would be by giving the dog an ample amount of exercise and plenty of chew toys so that they stay busy while you are out of the house. If a dog continually engages in barking during their owner’s absence, the owner should refrain from greeting the dog when they finally get home until they have completely calmed down. The dog should receive praise when it isn’t barking, and when it begins barking some type of negative association should occur in response, like the sounds from a bark collar or a sharp noise.
