In 10 Ways Cats Are Telling You They Love You

May 10th, 2011

Cats are known as not so dedicated to their owners as dogs do by many people, even they’ve never had a pet at all. But as a cat lover who’s currently living with 5 cats together, I know it for sure that cats are as friendly as dogs to other creatures as well, not to only their owners but also to other cats in the same household or area.

Cats know you are their owners and family members, they do understand what you’ve done to give them a safe and warm home. There are 10 general ways that cats may do it to show their loves to you, if you’ve watched your cats closely enough in the past, you probably can find out that they have already said ‘I love you’ for many many times to you. ;)

1. Walk slowly around you with their heads and bodies rubbing against your legs, and/or touch your hands with their faces and ears. This is the most well-known way for cats to show their happiness, they are intend to leave their own body taste on you to make you ’smell’ like their family member even more.

2. Like licking themselves and/or other cats, they will lick you too. As it seems, it shows their trust and appreciation to you.

3. Sometimes they will lick themselves right after you petting them, they do this to get your smell immediately and ‘taste’ it to remember you. My cats do it quite a lot in the past, I actually used to think they thought my hand was dirty so they wanted to tidy up their coats at once! lol Now I’m really happy to know it means they love me.

4. Cats will never jump onto someone’s knees if they don’t adore this person enough, so if your cats decide to sleep, rest or simply stay shortly on your knees, you should know it for sure that they love you.

5. As you will buy gifts to your loved ones, cats may do the same to you. They can’t ‘buy’ anything though, they will get the gifts for you by using their hunting talents. If you receive a rat or a small bird from them, don’t get freak out so soon, thank your cats first and then clean up the ‘gift’ carefully.

6. If they are walking around you with their tails standing up, you can tell you are loved and trusted by them with whole heart. When they’re getting close to someone or some cats they are not familiar or dislike, their tails will look droopy.

7. If they are rolling on the floor in front of you when you’re approaching, don’t just stand there and giggle, because your cats are saying ‘come and play with me please’! You won’t see cats doing the same thing to someone they don’t like that much.

8. When they put their fluffy paws on your hands or arms, they are trying to ensure that you have been told they loved you. Give them a gentle pet on their heads to confirm it when you feel the heartwarming loves!

9. When they walk to you after calmly stretching themselves, they are simply showing you all their trusts. As cats don’t usually loose themselves in front of people, a calm, steady stretching means they are care-free when the person there is YOU! Thank you for providing them a secure and awesome home so that they don’t have to stray, and please keep on doing this for them for their entire life!

10. I believe this is very well known too - when they snore as staying with you, it means they feel very comfortable and enjoy your accompany, even if you are only sitting or laying there and doing your own business.

While writing this article, my cats have told me about their loves to me several times by doing No.2, 3 and 10! How about your feline friends? :) Check out my blog if you’d love to purchase a gift to return their loves!

Remember How You Met Your Cat? (Part 1)

May 3rd, 2011

Every cat owner may have a story about how they met their cats, I could listen to those stories for all day, but since now you are reading my article, I’d share with you mine :)

I met my first cat, Sasha in early 2009, it was a cold windy afternoon when I was on my way to check if there’s enough food and water for those homeless cats in our neighborhood. Sasha ran into my sight immediately when I arrived at the ‘feeding area’, unlike most other homeless cats here who were very afraid of strangers, Sasha almost acted like he was ‘begging’ me to pet him, and he even jumped onto my thighs when I sat down to put cat food and water into those bowls. I had never seen a homeless cat looked similar to Sasha in this area before, so I guessed he might be a wandering through the neighborhood to look for food, and if possible, a new owner.

I didn’t plan to adopt a homeless cat at that moment at all since my mom was not a cat person - she likes pets, but doesn’t want to have one at home. But when I was on my way home, Sasha followed me all the way as if he didn’t want to lose this chance, and later when I opened the front door of our apartment’s, Sasha ran into the building nearly without any hesitation. I gave mom a call, asking her if we could let Sasha stay. I was not expecting a ‘yes’ actually, but to my surprise, mom said that at once - maybe Sasha was really meant to be our cat!

However, this cute angel disappeared in a morning 4 months later, he ran away through the window in our kitchen. We kept on searching for him for months but couldn’t even get a clue. It was definitely heartbreaking to me and until now I still miss this cat I used to call him ‘my son’, and I feel terribly sorry to him that I’m not able to protect him for his while life. I wish Sasha has found a new and kindhearted owner to give him another warm and safe family.

Two months after Sasha’s missing, mom’s friend gave us a call from a resort located in the countryside, and told us she’s sending us a new kitten. She found this kitten around the kitchen of the resort when she was vocationing there, there were a group of homeless cats and kittens in the resort, the staffs were nice to them but they also hoped their guests could find reliable owners for those poor creatures.

The new kitten was a girl, I named her with ‘Masha’ as I still missed my beloved Sasha. Masha was about 2 months old when she joined us, much different with Sasha, she was totally an over-energetic kid, she simply knew everything about how to make a mess in the house. It took me a long time to get used to this naughty country girl, but luckily, she turned to be a lady bit by bit as she’s grown up, and we ‘arranged’ the first ever date for her in the early 2010. The groom is a 2yo male cat of our neighbor’s. The date went on well(it seemed so), however we were not sure if Masha was pregnant.

7 days after Masha’s date, we moved to a new apartment near to our old neighborhood. At the very next day when we went back to the old house to collect our last stuffs, I found a kitten hidden in a wooden box in the garden in front of our building. That wooden box was completely abandon and despite we have many homeless cats here, I had never seen any of them staying in the box, hence I thought that kitten must be very frightened and had nowhere to hide.

That tiny kitten ran over at once when she saw me approaching the box, the ground was still covered by thick snow, and when I held this kitten in my arms, she simply could stop shaking due to cold. That condition was very much similar to how I met Sasha, so I asked my parents if we could let this kitten stay as well, since we’ve moved to the new apartment with a larger living room, we were capable of having more than one cat at home. Dad and mom were still immerged in the joys of moving to new house, so they approved immediately! lol They were not sure if Masha’s pregnant, so if she’s not, it would be nice to bring her a new friend to spend their rest lifetimes together.

The new kitten was also a girl, I named her ‘Julia’ because its pronunciation is similar with ‘pearl’ in Chinese. She was quite nervous at first when meeting Masha, although the old-sister was very friendly to her. However, after about one week getting along with each other, these two girls became really close and seemed enjoying our new apartment a lot.

My Own Cat Stories (Part 2)

May 2nd, 2011

Read Part 1 here.

About 3 weeks after the move, it was obvious that Masha was PREGNANT! Expecting baby kittens was indescribably exciting, lots of things to study: how to take care of pregnant cat, how to make ‘delivery room’ for mother-to-be, how to judge the babies are coming, how to deal with the emergency during the delivery and so on; and I almost couldn’t stop watching Masha slowly walking in the house with her lovely, large belly! lol However, we did worry that Julia would be a factor during Masha’s delivery, but since we would never send Julia away, the only thing we could do was to hope that she wouldn’t cause any trouble.

Julia remained quiet and nice as usual when the big moment’s finally came, but the delivery itself was unexpectedly difficult, we took Masha to the vet at the end to solve the dystocia, and managed to save her and four of her six babies. I cried when we knew that the two poor babies were gone, but it made us more determined to take care of the rest four babies as well as Masha with enough loves.

All the four kittens are boys, I named them with Paso, Doble, Tango and Waltz - my favorite dances of Dancing With The Stars Season10 by Evan Lysacek ;) With huge pleasure, it seemed like Julia liked those young boys as much as we do, and Masha didn’t mind she approaching her babies at all! These six cats together really made the most beautiful picture of the world.

However, when the kittens were five months old, Paso was diagnosed as peritonitis and the doctors from the best animal hospital said there’s no way to cure this disease. We tried to treat Paso with medicines for two days, but he didn’t manage to survive at the end. It was a tragical lost to me and my parents and it sill brings tears to my eyes every time I think of Paso. Right after Paso’s death, dad decided to keep all the 3 kittens as well as Masha and Julia with us for ever(we planned to find new homes for the kittens at first since it’s not easy to handle all of them), so that Paso could always find all of them at once when he’s looking at us from heaven.

Now Tango, Doble and Waltz are all 1-year-old and healthy, Masha and Julia are pretty as always and living their lives like ladies. However, Julia is not so close to the young cats as she used to be when they were kittens, probably because she has figured out that they are kids no more so as a lady she should keep a distance from them. lol But anyway, they still enjoy sleeping on my bed with their heads next to each other, and they still make the most beautiful picture in the world in my eyes.

There, this is my version of ‘How I Met My Cat(s)’, how about yours? Would you leave a comment here and share with us? :)

How To Protect Your Furnishings From You Cat’s Annoying Scratches

April 7th, 2011

If you discover that your window screens, chairs and rugs are looking like they are ravaged, your kitty is probably the culprit. Cats can cause damage to furnishings and can destroy your beautiful home with their sharp claws. So how can you solve this problem? To nip the problem in the bid, you must understand why she scratches in the first place.

Historically, cats were deadly predators who relied on their sharp claws to climb up trees and jump on their preys. [spin]But, today, cats have become domesticated creatures and don’t need to hunt anymore. But since old instincts never dies, so they still sharpen their claws.

Also, you need to understand that felines need to scratch to release some innate energy. Scratching is also a cat’s way of cutting her nails, since it removes the old outer part of her claws. Scratching releases special scents from the glands in the cats’ paws to help them mark that spot as theirs.

If you have had enough of your cat’s frequent scratchings, you have a choice to de claw her. However, this is an expensive and unnecessary surgery and you may want to try some alternatives instead.

Here are some solutions to prevent cat scratching

1. Provide your feline friend with scratching pads or posts.

Scratching pads are made for cats to scratch so instead of scratching on your furniture , they scratch on these pads or posts. You can get them or if you prefer, you can also make your own simple scratching post. You can do this by using a 2 foot high section of a 4 by 4, a 2 foot by 2 foot piece of heavy plywood plus a carpet remnant.

Once you have a scratching post or pad for your furry friend , make sure that you place it right next to her favorite piece of furniture. Observe her for a while. Once she get used to scratching the post, you can move it a bit further from the furniture. But you must take care to do so only gradually.

2. Use a pet repellent spray on the furniture

If your kitty still scratches away your furnishings despite having her own scratching pad or post, then you can resort to a pet repellent spray such as Bitter Apple. Of course, take care to test the spray on a hidden part of the upholstery first in order to be sure it doesn’t discolor the fabric of your furniture.

A good way not to spoil your furniture by spraying is by covering it with aluminum foil or tape that is placed sticky side up. Your cat will be repelled and should willingly turn to her scratching post instead.

3. De clawing

This is the option of last resort. If your kitty still insists on scratching, de clawing may be the only option left. As long as she does not leave the house, this should be a safe option. However, de clawing is a painful and risky surgery so think more than twice on this one.

How To Keep Your Cat Free From Fleas And Ticks

March 27th, 2011

Fleas and ticks may be rather tiny, but that does not mean that they do not pose a threat to your cat. Tapeworms can travel in a flea’s bloodstream and their incessant drawing of blood can cause anemia, a condition especially dangerous to kittens. Ticks have become synonymous with Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. If left unchecked, these small insects become problematic, and it is therefore important to keep your cat free from ticks and fleas.

As the old adage goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and it applies to this situation quite nicely. Tall grass and deep brush are breeding grounds for ticks and fleas, so cut down this growth around your property. Cats like to roam, so the less overgrowth they encounter, the better. If you have a larger yard, a fence can be effective at keeping your cat from venturing off of your property and getting into vegetation that is rife with ticks and fleas.

Thanks to medical advancements, there are several spot on treatments that can be applied to your pet that have been shown to kill 98% to even 100% of the ticks and fleas that your cat comes across. These spot on treatments are liquids that are applied between the shoulders of your cat once a month. As long as you remember to apply the medication monthly, you stand a strong chance of stopping an infestation before it starts. Just mark your calendar or set a reminder on your cell phone. Flea collars are also helpful but have limited efficacy when used alone; however, when employed in conjunction with spot on treatments, they add a nice extra layer of protection.

Sometimes, regardless of the precautions you take, ticks and fleas get through your defenses. Not only do they make your cat itch and present potential health issues, they can infest the home as well. It may not be your cat’s favorite thing in the world, but a warm bath complete with a medicated shampoo scrubbing is a highly effective treatment. Not only do certain dips and sprays do a fine job as well, but they can be used to rid your carpet and bedding of ticks and fleas too.

As long as you are dedicated and employ preventive measures, you can keep ticks and fleas off of your cat. Try to keep him or her out of dense thickets and apply liquid treatments once a month. Following some easy steps can solve a difficult problem.

The Right Way To Feed Your Cat

February 27th, 2011

Often it can be hard to know exactly what to feed a cat to keep them strong and healthy, especially when some of them seem to be not at all discerning when it comes to their food! It’s really important, though, that you feed your cat good quality cat food. A while a go, there was a scandal when lots of harmful chemicals were found in cheap cat food from China and cheap food in general can often be harmful for cats.

As a general rule, wet food is more nutritional than dry food, so you should try and feed your cat wet varieties of food wherever you can. Most commonly, cats like to chicken, lamb or beef, but you can feed them other things when they are in season. This could include other poultry such as pheasant or animals such as rabbit. A lot of it depends on what your cat likes – some cats like to have more variety than others.

Consider big cats in the wild. Lions, tigers, panthers and more all eat lots of raw meat on a regular basis, so it’s absolutely fine for you to give your cat raw meat as well to keep them strong and healthy. This can be an excellent source of protein for cats, especially when you feed them good quality cuts of meat. Just make sure that it’s all in season and preferably cut into small chunks as domesticated cats often need more help with digestion.

Don’t panic if you don’t have the budget to feed your cat on good quality raw meat all time. As a general rule, most meat is fine as long as you don’t buy the cheap varieties of commercial brands. The best of the commercial cat food brands have spent millions of dollars research the different nutrients that cats need and they’ve come up with tasty, nutritionally balanced alternatives that most cats really love. This can be a great way of getting top quality cat food on a budget.

One last, really important thing to give your cat to keep them strong and healthy is water. They should always have access to lots of fresh water, particularly if you give them any dry food as the water will help them to digest the food more easily. It will also help keep their fur coats shiny and healthy. Also keep your cats healthy by making sure their bowls are always clean as this will stop them from getting any infections and keep them in good shape.

Kittens : Preparing Your Home For A New Arrival

February 2nd, 2011

Whether you live by yourself and are seeking companionship, or the kids have been begging you for a new pet, kittens are one of the most adorable choices you can make. These little balls of energy can put a smile on your face even after an especially trying day. Remember though, that some care needs to be taken when preparing your home for the arrival of a new kitten.

It is easy to forget that animals don’t see things the way we do. In fact, that thought doesn’t often cross our minds at all. When getting your home ready for a new kitten, however, you need to think from its point of view. Kittens are curious and close to the floor, so you need to walk in mile in its paws (or at least around the house) and get close to the ground. While down there, look around for wires or other loose items that make for dangerous play toys for a kitten. Fasten down loose wires and raise dangling cloth pieces so that the kitten is less likely to hurt itself with these things. Be sure that pest control and other chemicals are safely put away.

Kittens are often quite active, so make sure that there is an array of safe objects available for the kitten to play with. They love balls, stuffed mice, and some will even go out of their minds chasing the light from a laser pointer. Scratching posts are a good idea too. Don’t get so anxious to bring a kitten home that you forget to have a supply of food on hand as well as a full litter box. It goes without saying that you would have a mess to clean up if there is no place for the furry little guy to take a restroom break.

Kittens, like their human counterparts, will experience stress and fright, so you should provide yours with a room in which they can escape from whatever is making them nervous. A bedroom, either yours or a spare, is nice as is a closet or any room with places to relax and hide. It is important that the kitten can access and find the room on its own because you don’t want to stress it out by forcing it into a particular room.

Using some common sense and preparation will make your new kitten’s adjustment to your home easier. Less stress leads to a happier cat. Your new friend will thank you and your own life will be less stressful.

Getting Your Home Ready For A New Pet

October 16th, 2010

Whether you get your new pet from the pet store or the pound, bringing home a new animal is exciting. Of course, there are important preparations that you need to consider before bringing that new cat or dog home. If you plan and prepare in advance, your home will be a welcome and inviting place for your new furry friend. These tips will help you get ready before you bring that new pet home.

If you have other pets, they may not be as excited about the new family addition as you are. Other cats and dogs are often jealous of the new pet, which can result in anger and frustration. It is a good idea to keep the older pets and the new animal separate for a little while until you know they will get along. Consider keeping the old pets outside while you go to get the new animal and then introduce them slowly. Make sure you closely supervise all interactions between your old pets and new pet for several days. Older pets may also need a little extra love at this time, so pay attention to everyone, not just the new pet.

Your floors and carpets will probably fall victim to an accident or two with your new pet. Make sure that you are prepared. Purchase puppy pads, enzymatic cleaners and make sure you keep them nearby. If you have expensive floor coverings, remove them if possible. Many people contain the animals to a small area so that they can watch for accidents and clean up quickly. It may take several weeks for your new pet to be comfortable in your home so be prepared to clean up a few accidents while they learn.

Your new pet may feel uncomfortable in your home. After all, it is unfamiliar. Take special steps to ensure that they will feel welcome. Purchase a few toys and find them a warm and comfortable place to sleep. Have some treats on hand. It may take the new addition a little while to acclimate. Be patient and understanding as they get used to their new surroundings.

These tips are just a few of the important considerations that you will want to remember when welcoming a new cat or dog into your home. It can be a great time for you to bond with your new addition. By taking the time to prepare, you will have a great opportunity to enjoy your new pet with your family.

Want Toy Ideas For Your Pet?

October 14th, 2010

If you want your pets to be happy, they need toys. A few good toys can help your pets stay entertained during the day. Toys don’t necessarily have to be expensive. You probably have a few great play things just lying around already. By giving your pet a few inexpensive toys, you may just help save your couch from being chewed up. Toys are great for pets and their owners alike.

Every home has a few empty water bottles lying around. Be sure to collect these bottles instead of throwing them away. Your dog will love playing with them. They make a fun noise that dogs simply cannot resist. To make sure the bottle is safe for your furry friend, make sure that you remove the label and the hard plastic cap first. This will ensure that they won’t choke on anything. Some companies are even starting to make cute furry water bottle covers to turn water bottles into cute furry animals.

Does your cat need some fun and affordable toys? If you have a spare ball of string lying around, they will love it, especially if you play with them. Playing with your cat is a great way to spend some time together. String may be inexpensive, but it will easily bring your cat hours of enjoyment. Just a few minutes of your time everyday can make a big difference to your cat. Most cats will love running and jumping in the air.

Cats and dogs alike enjoy playing with lights and laser pointers. You can watch them chase a flashlight beam or laser light. This is an easy and expensive toy that any type of pet will love. Be sure that you don’t shine the light into your animal’s eyes, or into the eyes of another person as this can cause eye damage or blindness. If you are careful, flashlights and laser pointers are a great toy for your cat or dog.

Another great way to play with your pet is to spend some time playing catch. Your pet will love spending time with you outdoors. Give a ball a throw and enjoy watching your dog chase it around. Don’t think that you need a specific dog ball. Anything you have, including an old tennis balls, will work great. Be careful and choose a ball that is a good size for your dog’s mouth and that won’t easily pop.
