Your Dog’s Sleeping Area : Steps You Should Be Taking

June 5th, 2011

Most pet owners want to do what is best for their pets. That being said, when it comes to the sleeping environment for dogs, many people overlook some important points. A dog that gets a great night’s sleep is going to be healthier and will have a much better temperament. Here are a few things that you can do to make sure that your dog is able to sleep in a nice, cozy environment.

You should start out by making sure that the place that they sleep will be quiet. If you are going to be in and out of the area, then it is probably not the best place for them to try to sleep. This will cause them to continue waking up throughout the night, and can lead to lack of sleep. Also make sure that they have quiet time during the day so that they are able to get naps as needed.

The next thing that you should do is make sure that you have a bed for them to sleep in. Many dogs prefer for their bed to be placed in a kennel. They feel safe and secure in this type of environment. Make sure that you are able to get them a bed that is going to be the right size. You will not want one that is too big, but you will also not want one that is too small for them.

Consider the bedding that you get for them as well. While a bed may seem like enough for them, most dogs will like to have a blanket to snuggle up with. It helps them to feel safe and secure. This is especially true for puppies. If you get your puppy a blanket, it will become something that is familiar and comfortable for them. They will likely sleep with the blanket for years to come; however you should make sure it is washed regularly.

While your dog is sleeping, it is very important that they are able to be comfortable. It is up to you, as their owner, to make sure that the environment in which they sleep is safe and cozy for them. This is the best way to make sure that they will get all of the rest that they need- both at night and during the day while napping. You will find that dogs that get inadequate sleep are more temperamental.

Dogs - Flea And Tick Advice

March 28th, 2011

One of the most troublesome problems anyone will face when looking after dogs is ticks and fleas. These parasites can be quite difficult to get rid of even if you are taking the right measures, though not doing anything to solve the problem is much worse. Ticks and fleas can spread some quite nasty diseases such as Lyme disease and anaplasmosis. Ultimately, these infections can lead to paralysis, anemia or even death. The most obvious signs of a tick or flea infestation are excessive scratching of the skin, lesions, lethargy, hair loss, loss of appetite or depression.

The process of getting rid of these parasitic bugs can be difficult if you do not do your homework beforehand. Not only should you treat your pet with the right kinds of medication, but you also need to look at treating your home to prevent these parasites from spreading and returning to feed on your dog’s blood. Even though it can be confusing choosing the right medication, a little research will go a long way and it is imperative that you know that what medication you will be using is best for the desired application.

To begin with you need to thoroughly clean you dog to remove as many of the fleas and ticks as possible. Use dog shampoos that are designed to specifically treat flea and tick infestations, but remember to fully read the instructions provided to ensure that you do not end up harming you four-legged friend. Be aware that some products can not be used in conjunction with other products and can cause unwanted chemical reactions; also make sure that your pet does not suffer from allergic reactions to the products you wish to use. If you notice any adverse reactions, stop using the product immediately, clean your pet with only lukewarm water and contact your local veterinarian.

The next task is to attack the environment in which your dog lives. This will mean, if your dog is allowed in your house, cleaning your whole house from top to bottom, vacuuming every room, every nook and cranny, under every table, behind every bookcase and in between every chair cushion, to exterminate the parasites. Then you can apply flea and tick powder or spray to soft furnishings and carpets so that every surface is clean.

It is important that you remember to continue to treat your dog for at least 2 weeks at regular intervals. Failure to regularly clean your home and your dog will result in the infestation returning. Even if you see no signs of the tick or flea infestation, it is still advisable to be pro-active in your pet grooming and cleaning as they can very easily return.

How To Keep Your Cat Free From Fleas And Ticks

March 27th, 2011

Fleas and ticks may be rather tiny, but that does not mean that they do not pose a threat to your cat. Tapeworms can travel in a flea’s bloodstream and their incessant drawing of blood can cause anemia, a condition especially dangerous to kittens. Ticks have become synonymous with Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. If left unchecked, these small insects become problematic, and it is therefore important to keep your cat free from ticks and fleas.

As the old adage goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and it applies to this situation quite nicely. Tall grass and deep brush are breeding grounds for ticks and fleas, so cut down this growth around your property. Cats like to roam, so the less overgrowth they encounter, the better. If you have a larger yard, a fence can be effective at keeping your cat from venturing off of your property and getting into vegetation that is rife with ticks and fleas.

Thanks to medical advancements, there are several spot on treatments that can be applied to your pet that have been shown to kill 98% to even 100% of the ticks and fleas that your cat comes across. These spot on treatments are liquids that are applied between the shoulders of your cat once a month. As long as you remember to apply the medication monthly, you stand a strong chance of stopping an infestation before it starts. Just mark your calendar or set a reminder on your cell phone. Flea collars are also helpful but have limited efficacy when used alone; however, when employed in conjunction with spot on treatments, they add a nice extra layer of protection.

Sometimes, regardless of the precautions you take, ticks and fleas get through your defenses. Not only do they make your cat itch and present potential health issues, they can infest the home as well. It may not be your cat’s favorite thing in the world, but a warm bath complete with a medicated shampoo scrubbing is a highly effective treatment. Not only do certain dips and sprays do a fine job as well, but they can be used to rid your carpet and bedding of ticks and fleas too.

As long as you are dedicated and employ preventive measures, you can keep ticks and fleas off of your cat. Try to keep him or her out of dense thickets and apply liquid treatments once a month. Following some easy steps can solve a difficult problem.

Kittens : Preparing Your Home For A New Arrival

February 2nd, 2011

Whether you live by yourself and are seeking companionship, or the kids have been begging you for a new pet, kittens are one of the most adorable choices you can make. These little balls of energy can put a smile on your face even after an especially trying day. Remember though, that some care needs to be taken when preparing your home for the arrival of a new kitten.

It is easy to forget that animals don’t see things the way we do. In fact, that thought doesn’t often cross our minds at all. When getting your home ready for a new kitten, however, you need to think from its point of view. Kittens are curious and close to the floor, so you need to walk in mile in its paws (or at least around the house) and get close to the ground. While down there, look around for wires or other loose items that make for dangerous play toys for a kitten. Fasten down loose wires and raise dangling cloth pieces so that the kitten is less likely to hurt itself with these things. Be sure that pest control and other chemicals are safely put away.

Kittens are often quite active, so make sure that there is an array of safe objects available for the kitten to play with. They love balls, stuffed mice, and some will even go out of their minds chasing the light from a laser pointer. Scratching posts are a good idea too. Don’t get so anxious to bring a kitten home that you forget to have a supply of food on hand as well as a full litter box. It goes without saying that you would have a mess to clean up if there is no place for the furry little guy to take a restroom break.

Kittens, like their human counterparts, will experience stress and fright, so you should provide yours with a room in which they can escape from whatever is making them nervous. A bedroom, either yours or a spare, is nice as is a closet or any room with places to relax and hide. It is important that the kitten can access and find the room on its own because you don’t want to stress it out by forcing it into a particular room.

Using some common sense and preparation will make your new kitten’s adjustment to your home easier. Less stress leads to a happier cat. Your new friend will thank you and your own life will be less stressful.

How To Set-Up A Home Aquarium

November 3rd, 2010

Owning and maintaining your own aquarium can be a relaxing and rewarding experience, but before you even think about putting the first fish in the water there are several things you’ll need to do first. This includes tasks such as buying and installing a filter, learning about water temperature and performing research on the type of fish you plan to keep. This is one of the best strategies for becoming more familiar with your new pets. Here we have outlined a few of the crucial steps you’ll need to follow as you get started.

Aquariums are made from a few different types of clear materials, including glass, fiberglass and acrylic, and while all of these materials make for a good aquarium, each will vary a bit in terms of price. Be sure to tell the pet store owner which type of fish you’re planning to keep, along with your budget for this project, and usually they can help you choose an aquarium that will best suit your particular needs.

Prior to filling the tank you will need to take steps to create the perfect biological system for the fish you plan to add. This is done with filters that separate the water you need from the chemical and biological impurities it contains. If you’re unsure if your filter is working properly, fill up a small container of water from your tank and bring it to the pet store to have it analyzed. Pet shops will typically be able to determine whether or not your water is ready for fish.

After the filters and power source are installed on your new aquarium, you’ll need to slowly begin adding the water. Once the tank is filled, and before you add any fish, allow the water to sit for some time—generally a week to ten days—to allow any impurities to dissipate from the water. This will also give you time as a new tank owner to ensure all of your equipment is working exactly as it should.

Experienced aquarium owners will probably be the first to tell you that their initial trials with aquariums were filled with minor setbacks, usually resulting from improper maintenance or care. Unfortunately, the same may happen to you, but by following the advice above and performing extensive research on the needs of your particular breed of fish you can greatly reduce the odds of something going awry.

Getting Your Home Ready For A New Pet

October 16th, 2010

Whether you get your new pet from the pet store or the pound, bringing home a new animal is exciting. Of course, there are important preparations that you need to consider before bringing that new cat or dog home. If you plan and prepare in advance, your home will be a welcome and inviting place for your new furry friend. These tips will help you get ready before you bring that new pet home.

If you have other pets, they may not be as excited about the new family addition as you are. Other cats and dogs are often jealous of the new pet, which can result in anger and frustration. It is a good idea to keep the older pets and the new animal separate for a little while until you know they will get along. Consider keeping the old pets outside while you go to get the new animal and then introduce them slowly. Make sure you closely supervise all interactions between your old pets and new pet for several days. Older pets may also need a little extra love at this time, so pay attention to everyone, not just the new pet.

Your floors and carpets will probably fall victim to an accident or two with your new pet. Make sure that you are prepared. Purchase puppy pads, enzymatic cleaners and make sure you keep them nearby. If you have expensive floor coverings, remove them if possible. Many people contain the animals to a small area so that they can watch for accidents and clean up quickly. It may take several weeks for your new pet to be comfortable in your home so be prepared to clean up a few accidents while they learn.

Your new pet may feel uncomfortable in your home. After all, it is unfamiliar. Take special steps to ensure that they will feel welcome. Purchase a few toys and find them a warm and comfortable place to sleep. Have some treats on hand. It may take the new addition a little while to acclimate. Be patient and understanding as they get used to their new surroundings.

These tips are just a few of the important considerations that you will want to remember when welcoming a new cat or dog into your home. It can be a great time for you to bond with your new addition. By taking the time to prepare, you will have a great opportunity to enjoy your new pet with your family.

Want Toy Ideas For Your Pet?

October 14th, 2010

If you want your pets to be happy, they need toys. A few good toys can help your pets stay entertained during the day. Toys don’t necessarily have to be expensive. You probably have a few great play things just lying around already. By giving your pet a few inexpensive toys, you may just help save your couch from being chewed up. Toys are great for pets and their owners alike.

Every home has a few empty water bottles lying around. Be sure to collect these bottles instead of throwing them away. Your dog will love playing with them. They make a fun noise that dogs simply cannot resist. To make sure the bottle is safe for your furry friend, make sure that you remove the label and the hard plastic cap first. This will ensure that they won’t choke on anything. Some companies are even starting to make cute furry water bottle covers to turn water bottles into cute furry animals.

Does your cat need some fun and affordable toys? If you have a spare ball of string lying around, they will love it, especially if you play with them. Playing with your cat is a great way to spend some time together. String may be inexpensive, but it will easily bring your cat hours of enjoyment. Just a few minutes of your time everyday can make a big difference to your cat. Most cats will love running and jumping in the air.

Cats and dogs alike enjoy playing with lights and laser pointers. You can watch them chase a flashlight beam or laser light. This is an easy and expensive toy that any type of pet will love. Be sure that you don’t shine the light into your animal’s eyes, or into the eyes of another person as this can cause eye damage or blindness. If you are careful, flashlights and laser pointers are a great toy for your cat or dog.

Another great way to play with your pet is to spend some time playing catch. Your pet will love spending time with you outdoors. Give a ball a throw and enjoy watching your dog chase it around. Don’t think that you need a specific dog ball. Anything you have, including an old tennis balls, will work great. Be careful and choose a ball that is a good size for your dog’s mouth and that won’t easily pop.
